Inclusive Teaching Training

The GSI/IA Inclusive Teaching Trainings are offered each Winter to Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs) and Instructional Assistants (IAs) supporting Computer Science and Engineering courses.

The trainings, which are part of the Computing CARES initiative educate the teaching staff about barriers to success that students in their courses may face, including imposter syndrome, stereotype threat and implicit biases. In addition they provide practical advice and foster group discussions on how to combat those barriers, specifically in the context of Computer Science education.

For Winter 2021, Computer CARES offers two types of training:

  • INTRODUCTORY CSE Inclusive Teaching Workshops, covering topics of implicit bias, stereotype threat, impostor syndrome, privilege. These workshops include brief small-group discussions on common CSE scenarios that IA/GSI may face in their course. In addition, the workshops discuss specific challenges and solutions related to CSE’s online teaching format. INTRO workshops are dedicated to GSI/IAs who have not yet taken CSE Inclusive Teaching Workshops in prior years. Participation is capped at 25 per workshop.

  • ADVANCED CSE Inclusive Teaching Workshops are reserved for GSI/IAs who have participated in the CSE Inclusive Teaching Workshop in prior years (2019 or 2020). The advanced workshops provide a quick review of key concepts. Then, they dedicate most of the time in discussing several scenarios and common challenges from current CSE courses (e.g., how to promote diversity and equality within teams carrying out course projects; how to address/respond to bias statements among classmates, how to work with students who may be facing difficult personal or home situations due to the pandemic, how to address news of incidents of gender harassment, etc.). Because of the discussion-centered format, participation is capped at 15 per workshop.

Courses participating in Winter 2021 are: EECS183, EECS203, EECS280, EECS281, EECS370, EECS376, EECS398, EECS481, EECS482, EECS493 and EECS590.

The workshops will be offered from February 25th, 2021 to March 1st, 2021, for a total of 10 workshops. Enrollment is ongoing at
